Golden Eagle Adds Private Zeppelin NT Flight to 2027 Luxury Rail Tour

A luxury Train company is boasting a 10-day European itinerary with an aviation twist—the trip features a private Zeppelin NT flight over Lake Constance in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Zeppelin lovers with deep pockets have a novel way to experience an airship flight: as part of an extended European rail adventure. Golden Eagle Luxury Trains has partnered with Zeppelin Travel and Helloworld Travel to create the Zeppelin-inspired itinerary, and the location choice for the flight is well thought out. Friedrichshafen is the historic home of Zeppelin airships, where Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s first airship took flight in 1900 above Lake Constance and the modern Zeppelin NT airships are built today.

The airship flight is a top draw for the expedition, but even on its own the rail journey promises impressive scenery, with the 9-night trip beginning in Vienna and ending in Budapest. The organizers describe the itinerary as covering Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Italy, Slovenia and Hungary, with the airship day slotted in after the train reaches Friedrichshafen.

Ride the Rails, Then Take to the Skies
The founder of Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, Tim Littler, has said the idea for the tour developed after he met Zeppelin Travel director Andre (“Andi”) von Zeppelin. Apparently the two men share a fascination with the golden age of travel, which became part of the inspiration for the tour.

“With the Zeppelin Express, we sought to create an opportunity for travellers to step back in time to the golden era of travel when airships, trains and ocean liners represented the pinnacle of exploration and adventure,” says Von Zeppelin.

“This exclusive Zeppelin experience will share my family’s history and provide guests with a unique insight into the history of the pioneering aircraft that laid the foundations for modern aviation.” The historical component of the trip that Von Zeppelin references also includes a champagne welcome reception with another relative of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, his great-grandson.

A Journey Through Zeppelin History
Also part of the flight day is an after-hours visit to the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, home to a partial reconstruction of the LZ 129 Hindenburg, with walk-in passenger spaces. The 108-ft (33-m) reconstruction represents only a portion of the original 803-ft (245-m) airship, but it includes recreated passenger spaces that provide a remarkable glimpse inside the Hindenburg.

Golden Eagle isn’t alone in adding Zeppelin NT flights to European travel itineraries. Viking added Zeppelin excursions to select Rhine Riv e r cruises for the 2026 season, with flights departing from Essen/Mülheim and Bonn-Hangelar. Golden Eagle’s offering differs in that the Friedrichshafen flight is a private charter integrated into the rail itinerary.

Flight Day
The airship portion of the trip is planned as a private sightseeing flight over the beautiful Lake Constance and surrounding forests and valleys of southern Germany. The Zeppelin NT will cruise at about 980 ft (300 m), well below its 9,800-ft (3,000-m) maximum operating altitude, and at much more conservative speeds than the posted maximum 78 mph (125 km/h).

The aircraft is a Zeppelin LZ N07-101, a semi-rigid, helium-filled airship measuring 246 ft (75 m) long with an envelope volume of 297,500 cubic feet (8,425 cubic meters). Unlike a conventional blimp, the Zeppelin NT has a rigid internal framework of carbon-fiber frames and longitudinal aluminum trusses, to which the gondola, engines and tail surfaces are attached.

Three 200-hp Lycoming engines drive swiveling propellers, giving the airship precise low-speed maneuverability during takeoff, landing and flight. The cabin accommodates up to 14 passengers and two pilots, with large windows providing every passenger with an outside view.

What to Know Before You Go
Guests set on enjoying the airship part of the rail trip will want to pay attention to the fine print, however. Airships only fly when the weather cooperates, and Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei states plainly that Zeppelin routes and flight times can change at short notice—even to the possibility that a flight could be canceled on the day of departure, with the final call resting with the pilot and ground staff. A cancellation would not derail train adventures, but it would sink the day’s headline flight.

Airship boarding requirements also contain some firm wording. The published requirements are that passengers:

Be able to walk about 165 ft (50 m) across grass at a normal pace.
Stand at the takeoff site for five to ten minutes as/if needed.
Climb five steps up to the gondola unaided, and walking aids cannot be brought aboard.
Only children over the age of two are permitted.
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Maximum individual passenger weight is 309 lb (140 kg), and travelers over 265 lb (120 kg) are instructed to contact the operator before booking.

What It Costs
The inaugural departure is scheduled for June 16–25, 2027. Bookings can be made up until 31 December 2026, assuming availability, but securing a seat for the journey won’t come cheap. Standard twin-share rates approach nearly AU$40,000 per person, roughly US$26,000 at current exchange rates, and the organizers say places are limited.

For those wishing to turn the rail and airship tour into something even more adventurous, there is the option of adding on a 12-day Uniworld extension from Prague to Paris. The Uniworld extension is built around a seven-night river cruise, adding just over AU$10,000 (US$7,000+) per person.
