For a few remarkable decades, enormous vessels of the air crossed oceans, circled the globe, and captured the public imagination unlike anything before or since. Rigid airships, blimps, and semi-rigids of all shapes and sizes were once a genuine part of daily life in ways that are almost impossible to imagine today. Then, almost as suddenly as they appeared, they faded from public memory. Most people alive now have never given them a second thought.
That seems like a shame worth correcting.
Airship Advocate is a community-driven project built around a shared fascination with airships: past, present, and future. Our objective is to bring this wonderfully esoteric corner of aviation to a broader audience through the things that actually make people pay attention. News and information that’s accurate and accessible. Images, videos, and documents that are hard to find anywhere else. Products and artwork that tell real stories and look good doing it. And a community where enthusiasts and professionals can connect, contribute, and find others who actually get it.
There’s very little quality airship merchandise out there. We’re working to change that. Our shop features thoughtfully designed products that commemorate specific aircraft and specific moments in history, the kind of thing you can wear, display, or hand to someone and have an actual conversation about. Beyond the shop, we’re also developing special crowdfunding projects aimed at bringing airship history to new audiences in fresh and unexpected ways, including unique collectibles and limited releases that go well beyond a standard online store. More on those as they develop.
None of this works without the people who show up for it. If you have knowledge to share, content to contribute, or ideas worth considering, you’re exactly who this is for. The site grows with your participation, and every person who joins, contributes, or simply spreads the word becomes an airship advocate in the truest sense.
